Beda? Bisa jadi iya bila dibandingkan dengan band-band ska yang ada di indie local scene Indonesia. Tapi bila Anda ingin menengok sedikit asal muasal para personelnya, mungkin akan mahfum mengapa musik band berpersonel delapan orang ini, terdengar beda. Karena referensi dan latar musikal tiap personel Sentimental Moods memang beragam. Tapi semua menyatu dalam satu ikatan, yakni sama-sama menyukai ska!
Dimulai dari pertemanan dua orang yang terlibat dalam satu pekerjaan. Ya, saat itu (sekitar tahun 2008-2009), Beni Adhiantoro dan Daniel Sukoco sama-sama di salah satu band terbaik tanah air, The Upstairs. Beni sebagai drumer The Upstairs. Sedangkan Daniel selain termasuk dalam anggota tim produksi band tersebut, juga aktif sebagai trumpetis Es Coret, salah satu band ska era akhir 90an. Ternyata mereka memiliki hasrat besar pada genre ska. Hingga akhirnya sepakat untuk membuat sebuah band ska dengan formulasi yang berbeda dengan band-band ska yang ada saat itu di tanah air. Seperti apa? Ternyata mereka juga punya referensi yang sama untuk ska. Irisan ‘influences’ tersebut ada pada band-band ska dunia yang mengeksplor lebih dalam musikalitas mereka. Bahkan termasuk berani menetapkan bahwa konsep instrumentalis (tanpa vokal) akan Beni dan Daniel pakai di band cita-cita mereka tersebut. Nama-nama seperti The Skatalites, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, St. Petersburg Ska-Jazz Review, atau New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, jadi acuan mereka saat membentuk warna band mereka nantinya.
Mulai bergerak
Cita-cita membuat band tersebut sempat terkubur dengan kesibukan dua orang tersebut. Sampai akhirnya muncul kembali dengan bergabungnya dua rekan Daniel yang sama-sama eks-Es Coret, Pardifa Effrido alias Edo di bass dan seorang tenor saksofonis, Yurie Fachran. Formasi makin komplet, ketika Beni mengajak teman setongkrongannya di scene skinhead, Wirastomo alias Wiro gitaris veteran di scene Oi/skinhead Jogja dan Jakarta, ikut bergabung. Wiro yang dikenal sebagai ensiklopedia berjalan untuk musik ska, turut mengentalkan warna musik band yang kemudian mereka beri nama Sentimental Moods. Nama yang diambil dari judul lagu karya John Coltrane, In A Sentimental Moods, yang dibawakan ulang oleh Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.
Formasi Beni (drum), Daniel (trumpet), Edo (bass), Yurie (tenor sax), dan Wiro (gitar) akhirnya berlatih pertama kali sebagai Sentimental Moods di Juli 2009.

Dan manggung pertama kali dengan formasi tersebut di tahun itu juga di G-Four Manggarai. Saat itu masih meng-cover lagu-lagu dari Bad Manner, TSPO, dan lain-lain. Tak lama kemudian bergabung Ijonk di posisi kibordis. Tahun 2009 ditutup dengan beberapa kali pentas dengan formasi tersebut.
Sayang di awal 2010, Ijonk yang asli Pontianak Kalimantan Barat, harus pulang ke kampungnya. Ini membuat posisi kibordis kosong. Yurie pun merekomendasi temannya, Gary, untuk mengisi posisi yang kosong tersebut. Gary yang kuliah di Institut Musik Indonesia tersebut juga mengajak teman kampusnya, Ranando Arliccan alias Aldo di posisi perkusi. Perubahan formasi terus berlanjut. Karena dibutuhkan posisi saksofon bariton, akhirnya Daniel pindah mengisi posisi tersebut dari posisi trumpetis. Masuk pula Suharman, trombonis yang direkomendasi seorang rekan personel Innocenti, band mods di mana Daniel juga menjadi personelnya. Menyusul Ditto yang mengisi kekosongan posisi trumpetis. Sentimental Moods pun semakin lengkap posisinya di tahun 2010, lima di seksi ritem dan empat di seksi tiup.
Mei 2010 mereka tampil dengan formasi tersebut di G-Four kembali. Penampilan mereka mendapat respon positif. Walau masih meng-cover lagu-lagu dari band-band referensi mereka, Sentimental Moods makin dikenal sebagai band ska dengan campuran banyak warna musik lain. Ska yang begitu kaya warna. Hingga akhirnya mereka pun sepakat untuk mulai mengoleksi karya-karya orisinal mereka.
Lagi-lagi Sentimental Moods diterpa badai, dengan keluarnya Ditto dari posisi trumpet di kuartal awal 2011. Sempat segera mendapat pengganti, Q-munk yang terhitung veteran di dunia marching band dan jazz di Indonesia. Namun Q-munk pun tak lama bercokol dan mengundurkan diri karena alasan kesehatan. Ditambah lagi mundurnya trombonis Suharman, karena harus bekerja ke luar Jawa. Tahun 2011 dijalani dengan formasi Beni, Edo, Yurie, Daniel, Wiro, Aldo, dan Gary. Hingga tak lama setelah pentas di event besar Jakarta Mods Mayday 2011 di bulan Mei, Gary pun mengundurkan diri. Posisi kibordis pun kosong, padahal mereka sedang bersiap untuk mulai merekam materi-materi untuk album mini (EP) perdana mereka.
Proses rekaman terus berlanjut. Akhirnya Taufiq Alkatiri masuk mengisi posisi trumpet. Trumpetis yang juga pelatih di sebuah marching band terkenal di Jakarta ini sebenarnya sempat diaudisi Yurie cs di awal 2011. Namun baru resmi menjadi personel baru saat sesi recording berlangsung (Agustus 2011). Daniel juga mengajak Dharmo Soedirman alias masmo, kibordis yang juga teman segrup Daniel di Leonardo and His Impeccable Six, band berwarna swing-rockabilly.
Formasi ini semakin solid dengan latihan yang intens untuk menjalani proses rekaman EP perdana tersebut. Selain itu, formasi ini juga mengisi beberapa acara komunitas dan indie scene. Uniknya, tak hanya diterima di kalangan ska, tapi juga komunitas dari genre lain. Antara lain jazz. Untuk kebutuhan recording, posisi trombonis diisi para musisi tamu. Yakni Timi dari Innocenti dan Djakartalites yang mengisi di lagu Ska Me This, Ska Me That. Juga Ndik, trombonis Bandung Inikami Orcheska, di dua lagu: rearansemen karya Ismail Marzuki, Payung Fantasi, serta Evening Bliss.
Setelah lama tanpa trombonis tetap, akhirnya masuk Amoroso Romadian untuk mengisi posisi trombonis. Formasi Daniel (saksofon bariton), Yurie (saksofon tenor), Taufiq (trumpet), Amoroso (trombon), Edo (bass), Aldo (perkusi), masmo (kibord), Beni (drum), dan Wiro (gitar) pun menjadi formasi solid teranyar Sentimental Moods. Formasi yang mengisi EP perdana mereka, yang pertama rilis sebagai free CD di acara Family Tree, Marley Café dan Sabtu Dansa di Bekasi Square, Februari 2012. Untuk selanjutnya, sesuai kesepakatan seluruh personel Sentimental Moods, EP tersebut didistribusikan sebagai free download mulai Maret 2012.
Tawaran untuk meramaikan album kompilasi “Return of The Rootbois #2” pun disikat Beni cs. Sentimental Moods menyumbang lagu terbaru mereka dari formasi paling anyar dan solidnya tersebut. Lagu Just In Time pun dirilis sebagai bagian dari kompilasi band-band ska dari 17 band ska di Indonesia tersebut di September 2013 lalu.
Walau aktivitas manggung semakin meningkat, tapi mereka tetap konsisten di target awal: album perdana. Rencana album yang sedang masuk proses produksi tersebut, akan rilis di akhir tahun 2013 ini. Album yang akan memperkenalkan gaya ska ala Sentimental Moods lebih luas lagi. Ska dengan warna khas berkat campuran berbagai style bahkan genre lain. Ska ala Sentimental Moods!

saatnya membahas postingan kali ini,, Jujur saya baru kenal dari Youtube dengan Band ini "SENTIMENTAL MOODS" entah saya yang kurang gaul atau kurang interaksi dengan rekan-rekan sesama penggemar musik SKA & temen-temen Skinhead .. ya maklumlah sudah berkeluarga 😎.
tapi walaupun baru mendengarkan Band ini yang personilnya Daniel (saksofon bariton), Yurie (saksofon tenor), Taufiq (trumpet), Amoroso (trombon), Edo (bass), Aldo (perkusi), masmo (kibord), Beni (drum), dan Wiro (gitar) saya langsung jatuh Cinta dengan musiknya dan beberapa kali posting di instagram tentang band ini dan tiba-tiba dapat tanggapan dari sang pemegang trombon Bro "Amoroso" .. band ini menurut saya keren banget .. semacam Melbourne Ska Orchestra , Tokyo Ska Paradise, Oi Skall Mates digabungin jadi satu dengan bumbu Indonesia. pokoknya keren buangett..

Setelah disibukkan dengan jadwal tur yang padat, Shaggydog akhirnya kembali merilis album baru yang bertajuk BERSINAR dengan single Honey di bawah label Fame Music. Ini merupakan album ke-5 kelompok musik yang berdiri pada 1 Juni 1997 yang beranggotakan Heru (vokal), Richard (gitar), Raymond (gitar), Bandizt (bass), Lilik (keyboard), dan Yoyo (drum) tersebut.
"Album ke-5 ini digarap setahun setelah tiga tahun lalu kami merilis album MARI BERDANSA. Karena memang kesibukan tur kami, jadi cukup lama kami mengeluarkan album baru. Album ke-5 ini terdiri dari 13 lagu yang disortir dari 50 lagu milik kami dengan single hits Honey," ujar Heru.
"Dan untuk pertama kalinya, kami berkolaborasi dengan musisi asing asal Jerman di lagu From Dog To The Dog," imbuhnya.
Selanjutnya, dengan merilis 13 lagu, band bergenre ska itu berharap tetap bisa bertahan dengan pakem lama, yakni merilis banyak lagu, bukan sekedar merilis single.
"Bagi Shaggydog pinginnya kalau ngeluarin CD ya harus banyak lagu. Rasanya mantap. Karena Shaggydog sendiri punya fans dan komunitas tersendiri jadi membuat kami tidak terlalu tercebur dengan arus yang ada," lanjut vokalis bersuara khas itu.
"Kalau 5 lagu biasanya yang buat pengusaha dan cilakanya kami bukan pengusaha, kami pingin karya kami ini bisa didengerin orang banyak," timpal Yoyo sambil tertawa.

ORESKABAND formed in 2003 when middle school classmates IKASU (guitar & vocal), TOMI (bass & vocal), TAE-SAN (drums), SAKI (trumpet), MORIKO (tenor sax) and LEADER (trombone) got together to start their own band. They started off playing at small clubs in their hometown and quickly built following with their energetic live shows and colorful personalities. A&R reps from record labels caught the underground vibe of the band and by 2006, these talented high schoolers were signed to Sony Music Japan.
From performing at local venues, ORESKABAND has gone on to gain recognition on a national level. An exceptional opportunity came when their song YEAH ! Ska Dance was used in a TV commercial for POCKY, a very popular Japanese candy. The girls themselves appeared in the commercial, which was shot while they were performing on a moving train show-casing their fresh ska-pop sound and lively personalities
Juggling the role of high school students and recording artists, ORESKABAND completed their debut mini album entitled Ore in March 2006 and received massive critical acclaim. In June, the girls collaborated with trombone player/Ska legend Rico Rodriguez on his tribute session album JAPA-RICO RICO RODRIGUEZ MEETS JAPAN with their cover of the Ska classic MONKEY MAN(MONKEY monkey MAN). That summer, the band also got an invitation to perform at the prestigious FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL which they graciously accepted attracting 1000 attendees, a new artist record!
Their popularity was rising high in Japan but the band was not willing to stop there; In March 2007, following the digital release of their US debut single PINOCCHIO, ORESKABAND kicked off their first tour starting from SXSW music festival in Austin, TX, where the full-throttle energy of their performance and their infectious spirit have earn them strong following and a reputation as one of the best discoveries of the festival. Back in Japan, the girls, now fresh out of high school, continued to play nationwide and wrapped up the successful tour with a sold-out show in their hometown Osaka.
August 2007 saw the release of ORESKBAND’s first LP in the U.S., a self-titled compilation of the band’s Ore and WAO (Short for “We Are ORESKABAND!!”) EP’s.
To support the LP, ORESKABAND returned to the states for a very successful performance at Anime Expo in summer 2007. ORESKABAND was also chosen to perform at Warped Tour that summer alongside many established bands. This US Tour proved successful in creating a new international fan base for ORESKABAND.
After seven crowd-rocking WARPED TOUR performances and new found international recognition, ORESKABAND moved forward with a determination to ring their music all over the world. The girls stayed in the U.S. for 3 more months and filmed their debut musical movie “Lock and Roll Forever”, produced by Emmy-Award winning movie producer Barry Rosenbush. ORESKABAND further added to their resume by recording original songs for the movie’s soundtrack with renowned music industry veteran Kaz Utsunomiya and several other veteran sound producers.
When all of the projects for the debut movie were completed, ORESKABAND finally went home to Japan but that did not signal the end of the whirlwind 2007 year for the girls. ORESKABAND capped off 2007 with a successful performance at the prestigious New Year’s Celebration event “COUNTDOWN JAPAN rock festival” in front of a capacity crowd of 5000 attendees.
In Mar. 2008, ORESKABAND returned to the SXSW Music Festival and announced their upcoming performance at VANS WARPED TOUR 2008. ORESKABAND is now in the studio working on their anticipated new album which is scheduled for an Oct. 2008 release in Japan.
ORESKABAND certainly has their hands full with headlining for the VANS WARPED TOUR, releasing their new album, and the premiere of their movie “Lock and Roll Forever”. 2008 is shaping up to be another eventful year in the very young and bright careers of the 6 girls from OSAKA, JAPAN.

2 Tone (or Two Tone) is a music genre created in England in the late 1970s by fusing elements of ska, punk rock, rocksteady, reggae and pop. Within the history of ska music, it is classified as its second wave.[citation needed]
The 2 Tone sound was developed by English musicians (mostly based in the West Midlands area) who grew up hearing 1960s Jamaican music and decided to play a similar style of music. They combined that style with influences from contemporary punk and pop music. The new music genre (and associated subculture) became known as 2 Tone because most of the bands were signed to the record label 2 Tone Records at some point. Other record labels associated with the 2 Tone sound were Stiff Records and Go Feet Records. Bands considered part of the 2 Tone genre include The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, Madness, Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers.
The music term 2 Tone was coined by Jerry Dammers of The Specials. Dammers, with the assistance of Horace Panter, created the Walt Jabsco logo to represent the 2 Tone movement. It was based on an early album cover photo of Peter Tosh, and included an added black-and-white check pattern.

In Memoriam: Laurel Aitken: the Godfather of Ska (1927-2005)
London's Club Ska is reporting that at 8 am this morning Laurel Aitken, widely acknowledged as the 'Godfather of Ska' and affectionately known as 'Boss Skinhead,' died of a heart attack at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, England. Aitken was born in Cuba on April 22, 1927 and moved to his father's homeland of Jamaica in 1938. In 1957 he began his recording career with the single "Roll Jordan Roll." The double A-side "Little Sheila" / "Boogie in my Bones" was the first single released on Chris Blackwell's Island Records, one of the first ever ska records, and the first Jamaican recording ever released in England. Aitken relocated to the U.K. and recorded numerous hits throughout the 60s. He was later acknowledged as "an elder statesman to the Two Tone ska revival movement of the punk era" (AllMusic).The 2-Tone era saw Aitken performing with the English Beat, touring with mod band Secret Affair, and backed by punk/reggae act the Ruts. In the 80s Aitken regularly toured the U.K. and recorded with British act Potato 5. In 1986 appeared in mod film Absolute Beginners alongside David Bowie. Throughout the late 90s he performed with several third-wave ska acts, including the Toasters and the New York Ska Jazz Ensemble. Most recently, 2002 saw the release of Live at Club Ska.

Rocksteady merupakan salah satu genre musik yang berasal dari Jamaika. Jenis musik ini berawal dari ska yang dibikin lebih halus tapi tidak seperti reggae yang pelan dan santai. Reggae adalah penerus jenis musik rocksteady ini.
Nama rocksteady ini muncul dari lagi Alton Ellis "Rock Steady". Genre musik ini muncul ketika warga-warga desa di Jamaika berhijrah dari daerah pedesaan dan masuk ke kota-kota. Di ghettoKingston, para pemuda menyanyikan lagu-lagu dengan irama rocksteady. di kota-kota seperti misalkan

The term rocksteady comes from a dance style that was mentioned in the Alton Ellis song "Rock Steady". A successor to Jamaican ska, and a precursor to reggae, rocksteady was performed by Jamaican vocal harmony groups such as The Gaylads, The Kingstonians, The Maytals and The Paragons. Dances performed to rocksteady were less energetic than the earlier ska dance moves. Rocksteady differs from ska musically as the tempo is slower and more relaxed. The bass is heavier and more prominent in the mix and in addition, the bass lines abandon the earlier "walking" style of the ska period in favor of more broken, syncopated figures. The ska-style back beat and the emphasis on the offbeat carried over into rocksteady.
